At last I took the long-anticipated Caribbean cruise! And at a bargain as the ship was repositioning. So I flew to New York to board -- a story in itself, what with a canceled connection and the need to get to Brooklyn Piers during rush hour -- and then flew back from Puerto Rico after visits to Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Thomas and a (very rainy but memorable) weekend on my own in Old San Juan.
I stayed in El Convento, a
splurgy hotel in a 350-yr-old building that back in the day housed a convent
for Spanish widows.
For a time I considered the idea of
retirement in PR. Ah but it's way too expensive to live in San Juan or, indeed,
Ponce, the only other big city. I don't do boondox and besides the island is
only 35 miles wide and 95 miles long.
